Syl’s fitness journey began with an emotional breakdown in a plus-size women’s store dressing room. Instead of asking for a bigger size of jeans, she cried and made a decision to change her lifestyle. It had been a while since she had stepped on a scale, but it wasn’t about that number for her. Growing up being athletic: dance, softball and soccer; she knew what she needed to do.
Syl became passionate about health and fitness and began a healthcare initiative at her place of business. As an AFAA personal trainer, she would hold workouts during lunch and hold seminars about healthy living for her co-workers. Remarried, her husband urged her to step out in faith and pursue health and fitness as her full-time career. He has been her biggest supporter.
Syl is licensed in Zumba, PiYo® Live, P90X® Live, Insanity® Live and Schwinn™ Cycling. She is experienced in working with seniors, beginners, athletes. Syl is passionate that all people deserve fitness; no matter what their fitness level or health challenges. She has no greater joy than seeing her students and clients reach new milestones they were unable to achieve prior to training.
“It’s You vs. You!” – Syl Bernal

My love for fitness began after I became a stay at home mom. I started going to the gym regularly and especially loved trying new classes. When my kids left for college I decided this was the time to turn my passion into a career! I am nationally accredited and a certified personal trainer through the American Council on Exercise. In my years of self-training I learned that nutrition and a balanced lifestyle is very important. It’s not about being perfect but being consistent. I love helping people achieve their fitness goals and being able to share my passion and knowledge with others. I believe it should be fun, finding out what you enjoy and then implementing it into your personal program.
Fitness is not just for the young, it’s for all of us, so we can continue to be healthy, happy and enjoy the things we love to do. Some of my favorite classes are bodypump, bodycombat, Piyo, spin and yoga. My newest obsession being Barre classes. So who all wants to join me in an amazing workout with great results?!

The human body is remarkable, from the most basic processes to its ability to adapt to the environment around it. My fascination with how the body works & adjusts to our daily activities inspired me to earn a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Exercise & Sport Science from the University of Wyoming and a Master’s of Science Degree in Health & Exercise Science from Colorado State University. I also attained the Clinical Exercise Physiologist certification through the American College of Sports Medicine, which is the gold standard for the health & wellness field.
I love that I am able to pursue my passion of helping people improve their quality of life through physical activity & eating healthier. A major focus of my personal philosophy is to instruct each person with whom I work on safe, effective exercises while also educating on all aspects of wellness so each individual can gain confidence and learn how to take care of their precious body. I have been fortunate to teach at Penn State University’s highly regarded Kinesiology Department, helping students discover how to find fitness for life and the balance it takes to commit to a lifetime of good health & well-being. My own personal journey of struggling with weight control & self-confidence has ignited my passion to share the knowledge & insight that I’ve gained, while continuing to learn all I can about health & the human body.

My mission is to help people achieve their goals and become happier, healthier, individuals. I believe fitness is a lifestyle, therefore it should be fun, not something you dread. I enjoy helping people find the balance between exercise, eating healthy, and deleting negative thought processes that keep them from achieving their goals. ” You will never regret reaching your goal. You will only regret giving up and not trying harder.” I am a nationally accredited certified personal trainer with the Cooper Institute, as well as being certified with the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America in pre/postnatal fitness, fitness after 50, and water aerobics. I’m also certified with the American Council of exercise as a group fitness instructor. I’m currently working at a physical therapy/sports rehab clinic where I help people get stronger and recover from injury.
