- Plan on ANY surgery to be on top of your meds for the first three days. Have a notepad by your side to write down alternating pain meds and anything else you may take so you don’t forget! If you’re taking a narcotic go ahead and take a stool softener with it! After those first three days plan on setting your own checkpoints, 7days, 10, days 14 days post, to start decreasing the amount of pain meds. This part is COMPLETELY up to you. But to avoid addiction, plan ahead for decreasing meds. For example, you could decrease to half of your prescription pain med, remove altogether and alternate Advil and Tylenol, make sure you have something in your stomach for all this.
- Start moving as soon as you’re able. A lot of times the body’s discomfort is just stiffness and lack of movement and blood flow, it’s amazing how draining, not moving is.
- Schedule regular massages! They can help to take the pressure off the joints and assist with keeping the muscles happy while movement is limited. Benefits of massage include increased blood flow(which means increased healing), movement of lymph fluid(aka swelling and inflammation), the balance of the autonomic nervous system(relaxation and spirit booster).
- Drink lots of water and eat in a way that fuels your body’s healing. This is more important than people realize. How can your body heal if it’s living off McDonald’s and cinnamon rolls(lol just an example) give your body the fuel to be successful in recovery?
- Now the most important one, having a support system. Having a friend that you can vent to when everything hurts and you feel like your body is failing you. That friend that will pray with you, keep your head in the game and encourage you! And let the prayer team at your church know! I know in our church our prayer team consists of some amazing warriors. Not only will they pray for anything you need with the fierce agreement, but they will also arrange a meal train for any of our members and send life scriptures!
